The Last Minute Handmade Market will be on Saturday, December 19th, 2009 from 10am-6pm at the Lake Erie Building at the Templar Industrial Park.

Cleveland Handmade is a collective of area artists that sell their work nationally through Etsy. They will be displaying work on the 2nd floor of the building. Works include jewelry, metals, ceramics, textiles, mixed media, paintings, clothing, accessories and more. Visit Cleveland Handmade’s site for a complete list of participating artists.

The Lake Erie Building houses over 20 artist studios on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Nestled in the historic Birdtown area of Lakewood this group of artists opens their studios twice a year to the public. The Screw Factory Artists are opening their doors one more time before Christmas for this special event. A complete list of participating studios will be posted on this site.

I Made It! is a regularly occurring, nomadic Market that provides the opportunity for entrepreneurs to establish their businesses and to enjoy low barriers for bringing their wares to market in order to create successful businesses built on arts and crafts. The Market is an inclusive happening that welcomes artists or other “makers” in the Pittsburgh region to meet like-minded individuals, to create new opportunities, or to find a receptive environment in which to sell new art.

The Lake Erie Building is located at:
13000 Athens Avenue

Thanks to ample space and a welcoming atmosphere, the community of artists at the Templar Industrial Park (which they refer to as the Screw Factory) has grown to include dozens of people — from established fine artists like Phyllis Kohring Fannin to younger artists like Christine Mason. Some focus on craft (knitter Shannon Okey) or even industrial design (glass artist Marc Konys). Northeast Ohio’s blitz of holiday arts-and-crafts fairs begins in a few weeks, but the Screw Factory artists’ open house gives you a jump on the season today. There’s also music by emo-rockers Casual Encounters and jazz guitarist Mark Kleinhaut. It takes place from 3-9 p.m. at the Templar Industrial Park (13000 Athens Ave., Lakewood, 216.521.0088). Admission is free.

The former home of the Lake Erie Screw Corporation in Lakewood’s Bird Town was left empty when the company moved to Indiana. But building manager Ralph Lukich wasn’t going to let the concrete behemoth just sit there. Starting with printmaker Phyllis Fannin and a few other noted Cleveland artists, Lukich constructed artisan studios in the building and, in the process, built an active community of more than 20 people creating everything from custom cabinetry to messenger bags. The artists not only work there, they also invite visitors to frequent open houses, so you can see them in action.

In addition, Shannon Okey & Arabella Proffer, whose studio is on the second floor, won ‘Best Dynamic Duo’ in the same issue. The building has been getting quite a bit of attention lately; 3rd floor ceramics artist Gina DeSantis, who coordinates the open studios, got a mention for her classes in the Scene this summer.
